The Krusader handbook is becoming "big" due to the many features we have,
so my idea was to add a tip of the day to help you using Krusader in a better way.
Everytime you lanch Krusader you will see a "tip of the day" window containing a small sentence with a powerfull tip
(ofcource this feature can be disabled).
Rafi is not convinced that the users will read these tips, so Shie proposed a poll ...
Please read also: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=7029441&forum_id=43320

So it is up to you now to vote for this feature

I have voted "yes", so the current status for a total of one vote is "100% yes"

I think basically it's a fine thing but I have to agree with rafi that the most of our users won't read them (although that may be the case for every tip-of-the-day)

Personally I just find them annoying. Putting a 'quick tips' link somewhere (help menu, konfigurator, somewhere) with all and only the important ones would be both less annoying, and also more effective, better to read all of them at once than having to click through them one by one.

Personally I like the way mc shoes its tips in a non obtrusive way in a special line above the command prompt.
What about a tip of the day in the statusbar (that stays for a few second)?

That is the problem of the user, not mine

That is why they can be disabled

We have Tooltips for this i guess but for some important issues it's almost impossible to implement a Tooltip.

Voting for yes only if they can be disabled.

Personally I think the way that mc does its' tip of the day is the best. One simple label (maybe with two 'navigate next&prev' buttons) which can be turned off and even if it's not turned off it doesn't annoy so much.

I don't think that popup window with the tip is the best idea because:
TOTD pops only when i turn the program on - I don't always want to learn some new functions in this moment so I close this popup. Then I have a break and think 'maybe I could learn something' and ... I have to start the popup.

If Krusader had a label with tips (just like mc does) I would never have to turn it off - it just wouldn't disturb my work.

The label has one more advantage:
It could 'control' the style of my work, diagnose it, and choose the hint that fits the occasion. For example, I copy many sinlge files many times and then I see:
Hint: You can select many files and copy them together to the destination dir at once.

Regards

yes it is, but i think it would take much time (just guessing) to put some artificial intelligence into Krusader to let appear a good Tip.
Otherwise Krusader will give you some *lunatic* tips
When you e.g. backup a file the next hint will show up Hint: You can delete as many files you want
Also if you don't use some available fuctions, i guess there will be never a tip to inform you ...

And the handbook is getting thicker and thicker every week, since the Krusader developers continue to write new features
That was the initial idea to implement ToolTips, to guide you ...

I'm afraid that one line will not have enough room to hold the Tooltips that i have in mind, so that i have not enough room to explain something decent.
I was thinking about 2 or 3 short powerful lines of text ( no bla bla bla ) that contains a link to the online handbook, if you like to read more about that feature.

Any thoughts ?

Since even developers are forgetting that Krusader contains a certain feature
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/krusader-devel/browse_thread/thread/77c25a0cc95ea168/fd9239d944092f4b#fd9239d944092f4b
the more i'm convinced that a Tip of the Day can help you to learn more about Krusader

Everybody I know disable "tip of the day" at the first start.

Tips of the day are really stupid. Even big companys stopped to put 'tips of the day' into their apps. And they invest huge money into usability testing, so you can see that tips are stupid.

But I saw some clever idea to show tips. For example IntelliJ IDEA shows tips when doing some long stuff (compiling, indexing etc.)

Maybe we can show some tip at the bottom of copy/move dialog, when the copy takes long time? Users will see this tips in unobtrussive way and if they don't need it, they can disable it.

I know this is an old post but I want to say my opinion: I don't need tips. I allways disable them with a first start of any application. When I want to learn more about features of app I use - I read docs/manuals.
