I have no idea, you are the first who is mentioning this. I'm not sure if Krusader is the cause of the problem.

I can report the same problem with Krusader 2.0.0.0 on a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation (kernel 2.6.31-14-generic, Gnome 2.28.1, ext4).

Whenever I want to switch directory or drive it takes just around a second before it happens. In the mean time the panel goes blank and approximately halfway through I'm informed that Mt. Man is working. At the same time I get a spike in CPU usage.

I don't think it's because of me using ext4 since I'm having the same problem when accessing my NTFS and FAT32 drives.

I can confirm that Krusader works ok on Kubuntu 9.04

Kubuntu 9.10 is just released at 2009-10-30 , maybe some other software is not ok?

Does the speed works fine with Konqueror or Dolpin?
In general Krusader uses almost the same calls as other KDE software.

Maybe creating a bug report at Ubuntu will get more answers or solutions.

I'm using gnome desktop but from KDE I'm using K3b, Gwenview, Okular and only Krusader is slowly working.

I didn't find similar problems with neither Konqeror nor Dolphin.

After further examinatioin it looks like it's linked with X.Org (X.Org X Server 1.6.4, X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0). After checking with top I noticed that Xorg jumps up it's CPU usage remarkedly (from a couple of per cent to something around the 60 per cent mark) whenever I change dirextory in Krusader. Unfortunately I'm not knowlegdable enough to determine whether that makes it a Krusader or X.Org problem.

Anyway thanks for taking the time to respond.

If Konqueror or Dolphin don't have a problem, than the problem comes probably from Krusader.

Maybe ask on a (K)Ubuntu forum for help?

I will use Kubuntu 9.10 in the future, but not for the moment.

After 9.04 to 9.10 upgrade, I've the same issue on all application: Xorg take up to 90% of the CPU.
For me the issue came from /boot/grub/menu.lst which I didn't update during upgrade.
That means I continued to run old kernel.
After menu.lst update with last kernel launch, everything run fast.

I might have stumbled upon a solution to your problem it certainly works for me.

I have an Asus Radeon 9600E graphics card myself. I got the idea that it might be a driver problem so after some searching on the net and in Synaptic I tried installing the xorg-driver-fglrx packet which provides 2d acceleration for Radeon cards. I can happily report that everything is back to normal and I have my speedy Krusader back (incidentaly it also fixed my problem with Thunderbird being painfullly slow.)

I'm not sure it'll work for you but since 9550ge is a Radeon card aswell it just might. Please don't come back to hunt me if it borks your set up.

This can be probematic because of dependencies.
e.g. if you have Ubuntu and want to install the Krusader DEB, you will need to install many other KDE and QT DEB packages, serveral of them have also dependencies ...
http://packages.ubuntu.com/nl/lucid/krusader
Just click on a dependencie DEB package, and you will see new dependencies, and new dependencies ...
e.g. Krusader needs kdebase-runtime, kdebase-runtime needs libasound2, libasound2 needs libpython2.6 , libpython2.6 needs libssl0.9.8 , libssl0.9.8 needs libc6 , libc6 needs libc-bin.
If you have a internet connection it's easy, it will start dowloading all dependencie DEB packages automatically.

I'm not sure if Ubuntu provides CDs or DVDs with all DEB packages like Debian does.
But even so, for Debian it's 31 CDs and 5 updates CDs ...
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.3/i386/iso-cd/
You will probably don't need all CDs, but like Murphies law, if you have some CDs missing, it probably has a DEB package that you need
